Have We Accidentally Outsourced Trust?
Here's a slightly uncomfortable question:
When did leadership become a software subscription?
Many organisations now know exactly how many emails we've sent, how long we've been online, how many meetings we've attended, and whether our mouse has moved recently.
And somehow, despite all that data, trust feels lower than ever.
In the pursuit of productivity, we've become obsessed with visibility. Dashboards. Metrics. Monitoring tools. Compliance reports. Performance trackers.
The problem isn't the technology.
The problem is what happens when control becomes a substitute for trust.
When people feel watched, they don't necessarily perform better. They perform safer. They optimise for appearing productive instead of creating value. Compliance increases. Ownership often doesn't.
And here's where leadership gets itself into trouble.
We act as though trust and accountability are opposites.
They're not.
In high-performing teams, trust and accountability are dance partners, not rivals.
Trust says, "I believe you're capable."
Accountability says, "And I expect you to deliver."
You need both.
Because accountability without trust feels like surveillance.
And trust without accountability feels like neglect.
The best cultures don't choose between performance and trust. They create both. Clear expectations. Real conversations. Adult-to-adult relationships.
Not because they're soft.
Because they understand something many organisations have forgotten:
People rarely outperform the level of trust they're given.
A Provocation
Take a hard look at your organisation.
How many systems have you introduced because they improved performance?
And how many have you introduced because you stopped trusting people?
If your first response to a performance problem is another dashboard, another report or another monitoring tool, you may not have a performance issue.
You may have a leadership issue.
And no amount of data will solve a trust problem.
Only a shift in leadership will.
If trust in your organisation is being replaced by more dashboards, more reporting and more oversight, it might be time for a different conversation.
Get in touch and let's chat about building leaders who create accountability through trust, not surveillance.
